MODERN MASK, an on-line, quarterly arts journal, is devoted to the insightful examination of art & photography, film & tv, literature, music, and theatre. Through in-depth articles, reviews, interviews, and informed critical analysis, MODERN MASK will highlight and examine both the latest developments of various artistic disciplines and the most significant achievements of our rich creative and critical heritage.
Inspired by designer and theorist Edward Gordon Craig’s theatre arts journal THE MASK--published intermittently between 1908 and 1929--MODERN MASK will cultivate the highest of critical standards while maintaining an attractive, reader-friendly style designed to appeal to a wide readership composed of students, scholars, practitioners, and those with only a recreational interest in the arts.
In alignment with Craig’s espousal of such fundamental Classical principles as balance, order, nuance, suggestiveness and, above all, universality and timelessness, MODERN MASK will locate and investigate those features of artistic endeavor that transcend the idiosyncrasies of particular epochs, geographical regions, and aesthetic/intellectual traditions.
